Music Alternatives

Looking for some alternatives to iTunes, Zune and MySpace to find some new music to listen to? There are some great web-based sites out there that will let you either build your own playlist (Fine Tune), choose songs for you based on a group or song you like (Pandora), or offer you some online radio stations (Live 365).

If you find a group you like, check out catalog to see if we have it. If we don’t, send us a suggestion and we’ll see what we can do!

The Dream of the Stone

The Dream of the Stone by Christina Askounis

“Your brother is in grave danger. You must return the Stone to the Door” That’s what Sarah Lucas’s substitute Latin teacher warns her of and then vanishes into…well…thin air! Her parents have just died in a plane crash, and her brilliant brother, Sam, is all she has left. Besides her distant aunt and uncle that is, but they seem to be tracking her movements just as much as that evil-looking Dr. Zvalus, the head of the mysterious institute funding Sam’s experimental research. Sam talked about opening doorways to other planets, but what does the “prize paperweight” he sent her have to do with anything? Even if “…hidden in its depths, among veils of clouds, glimmered a universe of tiny silver stars”? Her only friend is Angel, a half-gypsy boy, who makes her heart race, even as they race into a thousand futures on the Path of Light looking for the door that will save herself, her brother, and the universe “from doom.” Not much to ask of a fifteen-year-old who just wants her parents back, right? If you like mystery, fantasy, romance, and science all rolled up into one, then you will love this book and won’t be able to put it down! Trust me, I know.

Get Well Soon

Get Well Soon by Julie Halpern

"This is so pointless, and I feel gross because I'm sitting in the middle of a hallway with paper-thin pajamas on, and I'm not wearing a bra. In real life, I wouldn't dare leave the house with my C cups flopping all over the place, but I would also never sit at a desk in the middle of a hallway in my pajamas."

Meet Anna Bloom. Her parents commit her to a mental institution because they can't deal with her depression. Anna doesn't think she's that bad off--certainly not as messed up as the other teens in her ward. When she first arrived she was was screaming to get out, but the truly crazy thing is - now she's pleading to stay.

I loved this book. Anna is funny, and self-conscious, and vulnerable, and best 0f all--familiar. Read this book and I think you'll know what I mean.

The New Policeman

The New Policeman by Kate Thompson

Kinvara, a small Irish community, is suddenly running out of time. There’s never enough of it to go around, so don’t even think about smelling the roses, because homework, chores, and conversations are all cut short by time. Everyone notices it, but laughs until J.J. Liddy promises his mother “time” for her birthday. But how will he get it for her? The Liddys are famous for their céilís, a social gathering of music and dancing, and for that night long ago when the parish priest disappeared after stealing the Liddy’s flute to stop the music and stop the fairies. They certainly weren’t famous for being time-catchers. But he explores the underground houses, the souterrains, by the ring forts and suddenly finds himself in Tir na n’Og, the land of eternal youth. And the good news is that the fairies have plenty of time to go around. They are even looking to get rid of it, not very hard of course, because dancing and music come first. Will J.J. be able to resist their music and bring time back or will he, like the priest, vanish from his world forever? If you’ve ever wondered who the fey were and how our worlds mesh, this book will give you its answer in music and mystery. Definitely put “time” aside for it.

Free Laughs on Us

So, if you've caught any of the latest Real World (oh, admit it--we've all sneaked an ep when no one's looking) you know that the latest bunch of jokers are working at a comedy club doing improv. They've been taking classes so they can someday perform for crowds who are laughing with them, not at them.

Ah, I tease...but but here's my point! You don't have to wait until you are 21 and then drive all the way to LA to see a good improv group...no! We've lined one up for you FREE right here at the library, just for teens. They are called the Knuckledraggers and they are funny. Just catch them quick at one of the following locations as they are here for a limited time only:

Monday, June 16th: Cedar-Clinton @ 1pm, Woodward Park @ 3pm, Auberry @6:30pm
Tuesday, June 17th: Fig Garden @ 3pm, Sunnyside @ 5pm
Wednesday, June 18th: Politi @ 3pm, Mendota @ 5pm
Thursday, June 19th: Clovis @ 2pm, Gillis @ 4pm
Tuesday, June 22nd: Sanger @ 2pm
Thursday, June 24th: Reedley @ 1pm, Fowler @ 3pm

Don't miss it!

Head Case

Head Case by Sarah Aronson

Frank is just a head. That's what he considers himself, anyway. He is paralyzed from the neck down after a car accident in which his girlfriend was killed. Everyone at school hates him for what he's done, and Frank doesn't like himself much either. What is there to life if you can't walk, run, feed yourself, go to the bathroom in privacy? While Frank tries to figure that out, I found myself compelled by this book. No privacy, ever. Complete surrender to other people helping you. What would you do?

Project 17

Project 17 by Laurie Faria Stolarz

Six teens sneak into the abandoned Danvers State Hospital to film a movie just a few days before the former insane asylum is set to be torn down. Once inside they realize someone or something has been waiting for them. Locked doors, strange noises, patient files describing lobotomies and other horrors….Six teens go in, but will six leave? The suspense kept me turning the pages late into the night. What I think makes the story even more interesting, Danvers State Hospital is a real place! Check out its official website.

The Plain Janes

The Plain Janes by Cecil Castellucci and Jim Rugg

After experiencing a horrific trauma in the big city, Jane's family moves her to the suburbs where they think they'll be safe. Jane is bored, though, and tries desperately to find meaning in her life. She enlists the help of other Janes at her school to form a vigilante art gang -- the P.L.A.I.N. (People Loving Art In Neighborhoods) Janes. A fun, quick read with artwork to match.
