November = NaNoWriMo

Always wanted to write a novel? There's no better time to start than November, which is National Novel Writing Month, or NaNoWriMo for short. (It's really fun to say, go ahead, say it! NANOWRIMO!!) The goal is to start your novel on November 1, and then just write kamikaze style through the month of November, finishing 50,000 words (about 175 pages) by November 30th. Sound impossible? It's not! In 2007, over 100,000 people participated and more than 15,000 actually completed the word-count goal.

It doesn't have to be a masterpiece. It doesn't have to be perfectly edited. You just have to write like crazy.

Get registered at www.nanowrimo.org (It's free!)

But if 50,000 words really sounds like utter madness and you're 17 or younger, you can sign up for the NaNoWriMo Young Writers Program instead at www.ywp.nanowrimo.org . As part of the YWP, you can set a lesser, more reasonable, but still challenging word count goal for yourself.

Come on. Just do it!!!

Tales to Tell in the Dark

Tomorrow is Halloween, which means candy (my fave? Reeses) and scaring the pants off one another. If you're tired of the same ol' stories (the call was coming from inside the house!) check out the following books. They're filled with short stories perfect for re-telling. When you scare your friends, be sure to substitute in real names and local places...it makes the tale that much spookier. Have fun!

Teen Read Week

This week is Teen Read Week, a national celebration of teens reading just for the fun of it. The 2008 theme is Books with Bite @ your library and you’ve still got a few days left to exercise your right to read for fun. Oh wait a minute…that’s right…you can do that 24-7-365. Well….it’s a good excuse anyway.

Here’s something that you can’t do any ol' day of the year:

You've only got until midnight on Saturday, October 18, 2008 to vote for the Teens' Top Ten, a teens' choice list of favorite books from the previous year.

Is it Glass, by Ellen Hopkins? Unwind, by Neal Shusterman? The Sweet Far Thing, by Libba Bray?

Click here to vote for up to three titles or take a look at www.ala.org/teenstopten .

Check out the Top Ten lists from previous years as long as you’re there!

And while you’re at it, doing your teen reader civic duty, make sure you cast your vote for next year’s Teen Read Week theme:

Seek the Unknown @ your library

Read Beyond Reality @ your library

Unbelievable Reads @ your library

It'll scare the bejeebers out of you

For those of you hoping to start Halloween a little early, the Fright Night Scream Park is more than a haunted house. Four separate attractions--The Asylum, Desecration, Necropolis, and Psychosis--fill 23,000 square feet of terror. A psych ward gone wrong, a morgue with random body parts, a graveyard alive with the undead, and for those of you with clown phobia (you know who you are): circus psychos. I’m pretty sure the cleaning crew will be sweeping up bejeebers for the next few weeks.

Opens Friday, October 10 at the corner of Clovis Avenue and Santa Ana (one block south of Shaw, behind the Target).

New! Every Week

If you're like me, you want to know--no, you NEED to know what new books are available at the library. You can get your movie & music fix every Tuesday by checking out Join the Queue (Faythe alerts you to new releases, and you can reserve them right from your computer). Now, you can find out what's available, as we speak, on the library shelves. Look to the right on the sidebar (just under the poll) and scroll through the book covers. When you find one you like, click on it to see a description and link to reserve it online.

Then--let us know what you read and what you thought of it by submitting a review. Have fun!
