The Summoning

The Summoning by Kelley Armstrong.

15-year-old Chloe Saunders runs screaming in terror down the school halls. Is she seeing the horribly burned, but dead school janitor, or is she in the beginning stages of schizophrenia? Her concerned family sends her to Lyle House, a temporary home for "troubled" teens. In most ways, Chloe is just your average teenager - she wants to belong and she wants to get better so she can get back to her normal life. However, Lyle House is hiding more than one secret and they may be deadly. The author has written a fantastically taunt story with fully developed characters and a plot that leaves the reader riveted to the book all the way to the end.

This is the first in the Darkest Powers series. Catch the series from the beginning:

  1. The Summoning
  2. The Awakening
  3. The Reckoning

Feathered

Feathered, by Laura Kasischke

Afterward, Terri will tell everyone that, from the beginning, she knew something terrible was going to happen on spring break.
Something bad was going to happen.
She knew.
It was supposed to be the perfect vacation: hot guys, impeccable tans, and no parents. But for two high school seniors, an innocent car ride will drive them into the heart of their worst nightmare.

Beneath My Mother's Feet

Beneath My Mother's Feet, by Amjed Qamar

When her father is injured, fourteen-year-old Nazia is pulled away from school, her friends, and her preparations for an arranged marriage, to help her mother clean houses in a wealthy part of Karachi, Pakistan, where she finally rebels against the destiny that is planned for her.

The Kayla Chronicles

The Kayla Chronicles, by Sherri Winston

Budding feminist and investigative journalist Kayla decides to try out for her high school’s notorious dance team, the Lady Lions, in order to expose their unfair selection process. Specifically, Kayla believes that the Lady Lions are only choosing girls who are um, *cough*, well-endowed in the chest region. But no one is more surprised than Kayla, (who is, well, um, microscopic in the chest region,) when she actually makes the team and is transformed from fashion victim to glammed-up dance diva. Could Kayla be having a little too much fun playing this undercover role? Can you be a strong feminist woman AND still want to wear really cute shoes?

Election results

This election, more than any in recent history has generated interest in young adults. As young adults who will soon be voters you might also have become interested in this election and the outcome. MTV published an article about more young people exercising their right to vote this time around.
Also, you’ve probably noticed that there are red states and blue states, but what about the differences within a state? Here’s a map of the California presidential results. Yellow is McCain and Green is Obama. Click on Obama to see the map.

You Are Not Alone

The presidential election and all the issues on the ballot here in California this year have brought forth emotions in everyone. Some are whooping in victory, some are disappointed, and most people I know are feeling a mix of both.

I imagine for those who weren't old enough to vote it's even more difficult. So many issues were raised this year, and you might have spoken with your friends about things like abortion, racism, civil rights for gays & lesbians, sexism, and the environment. I'd also bet you discovered that not all of your friends have the same perspective on life as you do (at least, that's what I discovered).

If you feel like you're alone in your beliefs, or if you just feel alone, period, I want you to know that you. are. not. alone. Whatever you believe, there are others right here in Fresno County (and around the world) that feel like you do. Find your people, find help, and remember that we are a nation where our voices can be heard, popular or not.

The Bella Cullen Project

Am I the last one in the world to know about the this band? Aside from every single song being Twilight-related, they have a really good sound. You can listen to their tunes on their website, and if you like what you hear, request the album from the library.

Near as I can tell only one song (Switzerland) mentions Jacob -- what's that about?
