Vampire Diaries

When it was first announced, I thought the CW was scrambling to jump on the Twilight bandwagon by picking up a show called Vampire Diaries. I had no intention of ever watching it. To be honest, I am kind of over the whole "vampire with a soul/is vegetarian/or romantic at heart." But something crazy happened, I heard it was good. Then I heard it was based on on a series of books that were written 18 year ago! So I caved. I've been watching.

The show takes place is Mystic Falls, Virginia and is centered on Elena and vampire brothers, Stefan and Damon. Elena is the cute brunette and is a changed girl following the tragic death of her parents. She lives with her young grad student aunt and her druggy brother. On the first day of the new school year, she literally runs into the new hot and broody student, Stefan. He is immediately drawn to Elena. He kind of follows her and eavesdrops on her conversations (he has super hearing).

Almost as soon as Stefan reappears in Mystic Falls, “animal” attacks are happening (some of which are fatal). Stefan’s nephew accuses him of the attacks, but he insists that he is not to blame. He’s right, because his evil (but super hot) brother Damon has decided to follow Stefan back to town just to make him miserable. During their reunion, we learn that Stefan came back for Elena, who is a dead ringer for his past love Katherine. As the show progresses, it seems clear that Stefan and Elena are headed in the direction of being a couple and Damon doing everything he can to derail this, all while making trouble for his baby brother.

I really didn’t expect to like this show at all, but I did. Elena is likeable and I like the evil brother more than the good emo brother. I’m interested in learning how they are going to handle the vampire angle. They are slowly introducing their abilities and how it affects their lives and people around them. I wish the show was a little more consistent with the aunt. She wasn’t seen or mentioned at all last night, which is odd since there was a dinner party at Elena’s house. The music is good when it isn’t trying too hard. I’ll continue to watch as it keeps my interest, but it’s not appointment TV.

I've heard about these pre-Twilight books, and I've been wanting to check the books and TV series out, but I have too much English and History reading to do, which normally prevents me from watching television and reading interesting books. (I am currently reading: The Grapes of Wrath.) Aargh.
