If you are a loyal visitor to Read.Watch.Listen. you know that on every Tuesday, Faythe posts the new books, movies, CDs, and video games that are released that day. That feature, Join the Queue, shows you brand new stuff that we've ordered, but may or may not be ready to go home with you. That's why it's a good idea to join the queue--so when it is ready, you'll be first in line.
On Thursdays, I post all of the books we've actually received that week and are ready to be checked out by all of you. You can scroll through the book covers and click on one that looks interesting to learn more and have it sent to your local library. All you have to do is look for the slide show that looks like the one on the left...but (here's the tricky part) it's actually located in the right-hand column of the website, just below the poll.
Among the new books this week:
Royal Blood by Ellen Schreiber
The Reformed Vampire Support Group by Catherine Jinks
Strange Angels by Lili St. Crow
Swoon by Nina Malkin
Boys that Bite by Mari Mancusi
Zombie-Loan, volume 4 by Peach-Pit
Oh and if it seems like there are a lot of books about vampires, ghosts, and zombies, that's because there are. But there's also other stuff: light summer reads like Lovestruck Summer,Summer Girls and Sleepaway Girls; books about princesses like Once a Princess and The Reluctant Heiress; and the weird-but-intriguing Jack's Tumor. And more! And it's updated every Thursday, so if you don't see something you want this week be sure to check back next week.
Messed Up by Janet Nichols Lynch
RD is repeating the eighth grade but since he's already almost sixteen he's not even worried about passing his classes--he knows they are going to have to let him move on to high school, no matter what happens this year. His grandma left him with her boyfriend Earl when she met a new man. Earl's okay though, he doesn't really ride on RD about much and so life is looking pretty good. Mostly RD is excited about having a kicked back year with his homies but suddenly everything changes. Earl's health fails. Now RD's new goal in life, okay probably the first goal he's ever had period, is figuring out how to stay out of foster care.
Set in our own Central Valley, RD's story of sadness, hunger, violence and growth will stay with you long after you read the last page. I couldn't put this book down and I'd like to know if the same is true for you so please give it a try and then complete this form afterwards.

I loved Nick & Norah's Infinite Playlist, but Nick's not the only one making great playlists. Nope. People have been making mixed tapes, or CDs, or iTunes playlists all along. In fact, you've probably made your own awesome mixes. The only thing more fun than making a mix is sharing it with friends, and listening to the ones they've made.
Enter my friend Brian. A few months ago he proposed to a group of us that we start a Mixed Tape Club (we are old and therefore grew up making mixed tapes; the name is an homage to that but in fact we use current technology). Each person made a mix, burned it to CDs, and distributed one to each person in the group. In the end each person had everyone else's mix, and an introduction to their musical tastes. Some of the artists on these mixes (and yes, you can check them out for FREE at your library--just click the link to reserve) include:
Amadou & Mariam
The Bird and the Bee
The Black Keys
Brandi Carlile
Neko Case
Cat Power
Gomez
Jenny Lewis with the Watson Twins
Josh Ritter
The Weepies
Check these artists out. If you like, you can thank the Librarians' Mixed Tape Club. If you don't...make your own. And give copies to your friends! And send a copy to me! Seriously though, what artists would you put on a mix? Who's your fave? Let us know. You might just see it appear on one of our next MTC mixes.
I got 40 more reviews from you all! Fantastic!

For those of you not claiming a librarian or have a library you go to, you can still get volunteer hours for your reviews (1 review=1 hour). You can put my name (Faythe) or You, in the "tell us their name" section, since all the reviews come to me as it is. This might be useful to you once we launch the Summer Reading Program.
As always, do you agree with them? Think they are off base? Let them know! Or send in your own review.
If you review a book that is not in our catalog, send us a suggestion and we'll do our best.
Remember, some librarians will give you some volunteer hours in exchange for a review, you just gotta ask 'em!
