Michael Jackson

As you are aware, Michael Jackson died suddenly on June 25. Most of you know him as a freak or a weirdo, but we grew up knowing him as an innovative pop performer who had some cutting edge videos.

Thriller is one of our favorites and we choose to remember him as he was in the 1980s. If you are interested in his other videos, you can check out his YouTube Channel. You can also borrow his CDs from the library-- this link takes you to a listing of what we have.

We're reading your books

If you've ever been in a public library during the summer, you've probably at least heard of a summer reading program. This year we decided hey--why should kids & teens have all the fun? We want to read for prizes, too. And thus, our staff summer reading program was born.

Here are the deets: library staff read books from the teen collection; for every book they read they'll get one point and if they write a review, they'll get two additional points. The prizes are gift cards to Barnes & Noble in varying amounts.

Wanna see what we've been reading? Head over to our Staff SRP page. You can also see who is in the lead by checking out our names in the left-hand column. Got a recommendation? Respond to this post below.

For those of you not claiming a librarian or have a library you go to, you can still get volunteer hours for your reviews (1 review=1 hour). You can put my name (Faythe) or You, in the "tell us their name" section, since all the reviews come to me as it is. This will be helpful, since this year you can submit reviews for the books you read for the summer reading program.

As always, do you agree with them? Think they are off base? Let them know! Or send in your own review.

If you review a book that is not in our catalog, send us a suggestion and we'll do our best.

Remember, some librarians will give you some volunteer hours in exchange for a review, you just gotta ask 'em!

Updates

You may have noticed we have been tinkering with the website a little bit (we'll tell you why we did that next week). In our tinkering, we noticed that we practically overhauled the series section and wanted to highlight some of the books that we added or some that have been updated (finally). Just a few are:

Carter House Girls
Dead is... (series)
Demonata (Has an end date)
Evermore (Immortals Series)
Evernight
Generation Dead (series)
Ghostgirl
Lily Dade
Sweet Seasons
Wake (Dream Catcher Series)

We have been getting a lot of requests to purchase The Vampire Diaries series. This series was originally published in 1991 and 1992. In 2007 the books were repacked and released with books 1 and 2 together and 3 and 4 together. Either way, we have them here. The fifth book, Nightfall, can be requested here.

June is LGBT Pride Month

This month, President Obama proclaimed June as Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Pride Month (see the proclamation here, on the White House website). In his proclamation, President Obama states that "LGBT youth should feel safe to learn without the fear of harassment". Many schools have GSAs (Gay-Straight Alliances) to help with this issue, and we at the public library believe in providing access to information for every member of our community. So, here's some resources--whether you're gay, straight, or just curious--here you go.

  • Local Gay-Straight Alliances - see if your high school has one
  • The Trevor Project & The Matthew Shepard Foundation - two online communities for gay youth
  • S.A.F.E. - Straight Advocates for Equality (a local group)
  • PFLAG - Parents, Friends & Family of Lesbians & Gays
  • Our Queer Lit booklist right here on Read.Watch.Listen., as well as the Sex & Relationships page in the 411 section. It lists all kinds of stuff about, well, sex & relationships for all teens, even those practicing abstinence. There are also several phone numbers of hotlines to call if you need to talk to someone.
  • What is Gay Pride? The history behind it, including why the rainbow is its symbol.
