Love You Hate You Miss You

Love You Hate You Miss You by Elizabeth Scott
Reviewed by Faythe

Amy has just left rehab and now must face the painfully reality that her best friend is dead. Amy blames herself for her death, and some of her classmates agree. Amy is now a junior and must deal with parents who are actually paying attention to her (after ignoring her for years), honors classes, being a social outcast, living life without drinking and Patrick, who unnerves her as she is trying not to think about him. Scott does a great job of capturing Amy's emotions and you can feel the awkwardness between Amy and her parents.

This is the third book I've read by Scott this year and I am becoming a fan!

Isadora Duncan

Isadora Duncan: A Graphic Biography by Sabrina Jones

A visionary. A radical. A romantic. The first woman to suffer from a clothing malfunction?

I can't believe I'd never heard anything about Isadora Duncan before. Sure, her name sounded familiar, but it wasn't until Gina reviewed this book for our staff summer reading program that I took notice. Wow...what a life she led. Growing up in a family of artists, Isadora Duncan took inspiration from the ocean, nature, and Greek art and became a pioneer of modern dance. Throughout America, Europe, and Russia she was both beloved and questioned for her free-thinking attitude.

I loved this book. The illustrations are amazing and the story is inspirational. Isadora was imperfect but she was a fierce, strong woman who knew what she wanted.

Vampire Diaries

When it was first announced, I thought the CW was scrambling to jump on the Twilight bandwagon by picking up a show called Vampire Diaries. I had no intention of ever watching it. To be honest, I am kind of over the whole "vampire with a soul/is vegetarian/or romantic at heart." But something crazy happened, I heard it was good. Then I heard it was based on on a series of books that were written 18 year ago! So I caved. I've been watching.

The show takes place is Mystic Falls, Virginia and is centered on Elena and vampire brothers, Stefan and Damon. Elena is the cute brunette and is a changed girl following the tragic death of her parents. She lives with her young grad student aunt and her druggy brother. On the first day of the new school year, she literally runs into the new hot and broody student, Stefan. He is immediately drawn to Elena. He kind of follows her and eavesdrops on her conversations (he has super hearing).

Almost as soon as Stefan reappears in Mystic Falls, “animal” attacks are happening (some of which are fatal). Stefan’s nephew accuses him of the attacks, but he insists that he is not to blame. He’s right, because his evil (but super hot) brother Damon has decided to follow Stefan back to town just to make him miserable. During their reunion, we learn that Stefan came back for Elena, who is a dead ringer for his past love Katherine. As the show progresses, it seems clear that Stefan and Elena are headed in the direction of being a couple and Damon doing everything he can to derail this, all while making trouble for his baby brother.

I really didn’t expect to like this show at all, but I did. Elena is likeable and I like the evil brother more than the good emo brother. I’m interested in learning how they are going to handle the vampire angle. They are slowly introducing their abilities and how it affects their lives and people around them. I wish the show was a little more consistent with the aunt. She wasn’t seen or mentioned at all last night, which is odd since there was a dinner party at Elena’s house. The music is good when it isn’t trying too hard. I’ll continue to watch as it keeps my interest, but it’s not appointment TV.

Shorten Your Life

By now we all know about Twitter--it's a microblogging site that allows us to update our friends on every little thing we're doing in 140 characters or less. But can you tell us your entire life story in 140 characters or less? Some teens at the Woodward Park Library recently gave it a go. Here are a few of their bio-tweets.

I was born, band is my life and probably my death.

I was born to write and I've spent my entire life reading and writing. I live w my dad & annoying sister who likes Jonas Bros. Enough said.

I came, I saw, I've yet to conquer.

I've been doing music since I was 5, singing since I was 4. I attend University High :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) I love to talk on AIM and gtalk.

I now attend Buchanan High School & Fine Arts Academy. I love being in Drama class with my friends. I have 5 cats but I love dogs.

Have you thought of yours yet? Now here's where it gets really tough. Try whittling your life story into six words. The new book I Can't Keep My Own Secrets: Six-Word Memoirs by Teens Famous and Obscure is full of teens who did just that. Here are six of those six-word memoirs:

I'm just standing in the background.
Googled what he called me. Ouch.
Family falls apart after mom dies.
Still ride shopping carts down stairs.
ADD, OCD. Sucks to be me.
I'll have a True Hollywood Story.

So...what's your story?

Fun Nonfiction

This past summer our staff had our own summer reading program. Below are some of our favorite fun nonfiction books--those you wouldn't pick up for a homework assignment but are fun to breeze through with friends. All of these got the highest rating possible: "It was amazing!". Thanks to Gina, Lisa, Roberta and Sue for the reviews.

Subway Art : 25th Anniversary Edition
This is a new edition of the historic book that first put graffiti art on the radar of many and a book that helped spread the art form beyond urban cities and thus created a worldwide sensation.

Plush You! Loveable Misfit Toys to Sew and Stuff
Oh my lovely goodness, this book was MADE FOR ME. Or at least for people who like to handmake me wonderful little presents. :) Includes a list of materials and necessities to make everything, including an inside out bird, a much-loved Socktopus, the precious pink pirate bunny, or my fav: Wiggle, the Sweater-Wearing Tooth. Eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!!!

I Can Has Cheezburger?: A LOLcat Colleckshun
If you'd like to know the history of monorail cat, ceiling cat or even the cheezburger joke itself, this LOLCat colleckshun is the book for you. It's full of cute cat pictures with funny captions and all things considered the humor gets rather sophisticated.

More Chinglish: Speaking in Tongues
Oliver is free to makes happy fun of bad English translations in China. Tasteless or delicious? You decide too! Emotional free to visit his blog site: http://www.chinglish.de/

The Travel Book: A Journey Through Every Country in the World
This book offers 4 pages on every country in the world. For a country you've never heard of this is just about right but for countries that are a popular travel destination this format doesn't quite work. It's fun to browse though and picture how it would be to become a world traveler.

Extreme Pumpkins II
Do you ever get tired of carving that boring old pumpkin with a toothy grin? Check out this book for inspiration on how to bring your next pumpkin to a whole new level. For example, the goop is KEY to increasing the yuck factor. From vomit to messy diapers, the goop that everyone else just throws away is really the one ingredient that makes your pumpkin EXTREME.

Body Drama
Detailed advice, fast facts, plus some lighthearted charts and lists (like “99 nicknames for boobs”), this book includes everything a girl needs to know but is afraid to ask. Includes info on shaving, breasts, periods, STIs, nutrition, diet and exercise, plus the truth about airbrushed photos (with before and after pics!).

Show Me How: 500 Instructions You Should Know
Show Me How is jam-packed with "instructions for life from the everyday to the exotic." The authors admit to monthly gatherings where they get together with friends and show each other how to do cool stuff. This eclectic collection uses clever illustrations and clear instructions to teach the reader an amazing range of skills and knowledge. Need to know how to carve a hollow book? see # 14. How about how to create a chain mail bikini? #25 (I already knew how to do chain mail, but learning new styles is always fun.) My favorite was #406-learn how to mount a camel. Not so often needed, but still an immensely useful bit of knowledge.

High Voltage Tattoo
"If AC-DC opened up a beauty parlor, it would be High Voltage."

Kat Von D, star of L.A. Ink, has more tattoos than just about anyone I've ever seen, and plans to get more until someday she has a full body suit.

Her book describes her life on the edge, her TV show, her art, and the people who influenced her. Lots of photos and descriptions of the tattoos of both Kat and her many customers make this a fascinating read.

Faces of Sunset Boulevard: A Portrait of Los Angeles
Anyone from California can tell you that the state has everything and anything, and this fabulous and poignant collection of photography proves that just one street in LA has that and more. This photographer has put together a yearbook of sorts featuring the individuals he met down Sunset Boulevard, which runs through many unique Los Angeles neighborhoods, from Echo Park to Bel Air. Judging by this book, LA is officially home to the poets, the rockers, the misfits, the posh, the damned, the working stiffs, the beauties, and the ones just barely holding on, and that's just a drop in the bucket. There are lots of famous faces, like our very own Governator and even Henry Winkler, tons of not-so-famous-but-who-knows-someday-they-will-be-famous faces, and faces that would have gone on completely anonymous if it weren't for this book. Art at its most real and personal, and reality at its most artistic.
