The Last Thing I Remember

The Last Thing I Remember by Andrew Klavan

"Suddenly I woke up strapped to a chair. Dazed, I looked around me. I was in a room with a concrete floor and cinder block walls. A single bare lightbulb hung glaring from a wire above me. There were instruments on a tray--awful instruments--blades and pincers and other things. They were covered in blood. My blood."

This is the first page to an exciting new series called The Homelanders. 17-year-old Charlie West went to bed after an ordinary day at school, only to wake up to find that a year has passed, he's been convicted of murdering his best friend, and a mysterious government group is trying to kill him.

The book grabs the reader from the first page, riveted to Charlie's desperate attempt to escape his captors and his search for answers to the missing year of his life. The characters are well written and the plot is so exciting you'll find yourself unable to put the book down. However, the author does leave a number of questions unanswered, so you'll have to wait until the second book is published to find out what happened to Charlie, and why.

Fairy Tale

Morgan Sparks seems to be living a charmed life. She has the ability to see the future, she's a great student, and her boyfriend is handsome, funny, the football quarterback and her best friend since grade school. A week before his sixteenth birthday, Cam discovers something about himself which will cause Morgan to question their relationship, her loyalty and the very natural of what is real and what isn't. At it's best, Fairy Tale shines with wit, clever dialogue, and insightfully captures the joy and angst of teenagers. However, Cyn Balog's first foray into writing a novel is marred by a plot which begins with a certain absurd believability but just sort of peters out into vagueness. The adults in the book, and there aren't many, are mockingly written as overbearing, fat, and unaware to the point of stupidity. While Fairy Tale is often entertaining and Cyn Balog is an author to look out for in the future, this novel's strengths are ultimately overshadowed by its weaknesses.

My Invented Life

My Invented Life by Lauren Bjorkman
Reviewed by Lisa L.

Roz has always been close to her sister, Eva, but recently Eva has stopped confiding in Roz. This happened about the same time that Eva started dating the guy Roz had crushed on from the beginning of time. Despite all this Roz is desperate for Eva to be her friend again and while trying to figure out what is up, Roz begins to suspect that Eva may be a lesbian. When she confronts her sister about her suspicions, Eva doesn't laugh it off like Roz expected, but rather acts very defensive. Roz is confident that it wouldn't be such a big deal to be an out and proud high schooler but when she tries to convince Eva of this fact, her sister dares her to try coming out herself. Ever the theater-geek, before thinking through the ramifications, Roz finds herself announcing to classmates that she has a girlfriend.

At first Roz thinks of the white lie as merely her biggest acting challenge to date and nothing more but surprisingly, Roz finds that pretending to be gay leaves her with questions about her own. If she's faking gay, why is she hoping that an alleged lesbian classmate has feelings for her? Is it possible that despite her boy crazy past she's not 100% straight herself? Is Roz helping Eva accept herself or is she discovering her own true self instead?
