Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs: the video game

Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs (video game)

One of the things I like most about the library having video games is that you get a chance to try a game out for free before deciding if you like it well enough to buy it.

Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs was, for me, one of those games. It's available through the library on Wii, XBox 360, DS and PS3, and I thought "how fun would it be to shoot food as it's falling from the sky?".

Turns out, it's only kind of fun. The graphics are ok but not great. Avoiding falling chili peppers that turn into lava once they hit the ground, our hero Flint starts out shooting (and melting) huge popsicles and ice cream snowmen, moving on to different areas of town. I especially liked the Italian neighborhood, where--armed with a fork--Flint can wind himself up a spaghetti noodle as a way to scale large buildings.

I have to say, though, that despite the cute ideas (thanks to the great book by Judi Barrett), the game itself falls a little flat. Not three levels in and I was already bored. And I'm only a casual gamer, so I can imagine those more dedicated than I would probably pass on it. That said, it still might be worth it to check it out yourself, especially since it's free to do so. If you enjoy slicing through jello molds, running from the evil gummi bears chasing you, or spearing giant ravioli, it might be a fun diversion.
