Today, as declared by UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization) back in 1999, is World Poetry Day--and so we challenge you to write a poem!
You don't have to consider yourself the best of creative writers, or an expert in poetic forms, to write a great poem; to get started, you mainly just need to have something to say and to be willing to seek feedback and revise so as to truly communicate experience or perspective to others.
If you're already a practiced poet and feel comfortable writing a poem from scratch, the Internet is rife with poetry prompts to get your creative juices flowing.
If you're less confident in your skillset, don't be deterred from "contribut[ing] [your] verse," as Mr. Keating would say. Try out the helpful poetry tools here.
And if you're feeling especially brave, please share your poem(s) with us in the comments! You might even think of what you write today as a rough draft for FCPL's annual April poetry contest.
