Dirty Little Secrets

Dirty Little SecretsBy C.J. Omololu

Sixteen year-old Lucy never invites friends home. When they come to pick her up, she meets them outside. Her biggest fear is that someone will discover the secret lurking behind the front door.

No, her parents aren't alcoholics or drug addicts. She's not physically or sexually abused. Her secret is more unusual, and most people wouldn't suspect it, unless they smelled a trace of it on her clothes.

Her mother is a hoarder. She collects anything and everything, including garbage. Over the years the piles have turned into walls of junk, and Lucy must navigate along very narrow pathways to her bedroom sanctuary. The entire house stinks of rotting food and garbage, and she hasn't seen the kitchen in years.

As you can imagine, Lucy avoids home whenever possible. She spends most of her time at her best friend's house. But one morning Lucy comes home to her mother lying on the floor. One of those carefully stacked walls of junk has fallen on her mom and now she's dead.

The first thing most people would do is call 911. Not Lucy. She knows that no stretcher will be able to fit through the narrow pathways, and besides that--she doesn't want the whole world to know her secret. She imagines the headlines: Woman Crushed by House of Garbage.

Immediately Lucy knows what must be done. But how can one person clean up decades' worth of junk alone--and before the body starts to decompose?
