Free Fridays: Aries Rising

Today is the start of our new series, Free Fridays. Every Friday we will review a new book--sometimes ones that haven't even been published yet--and give an advanced copy of the book away. To get the book, it's simple: just be the first to comment on the review and be sure to tell us which library you'd like to pick up your new book at. We'll take care of the rest!

And before you read this first Free Fridays review, a heads up: Bonnie Hearn Hill, the author of the book below, will be at the Fresno Barnes & Noble *tomorrow* at 2pm to mark the release of her newest in the Star Crossed series, Taurus Eyes. Don't miss it!

Aries Rising by Bonnie Hearn Hill
Review by Lisa E.

Imagine you could influence people to do what you wanted.  For Logan McRae, this is a reality.  Ever since she found an old book called Fearless Astrology, she has been using what she’s learned about Zodiac signs to change her life.

In Aries Rising, the first of the Star Crossed series, Logan is a high school sophomore in Terra Bella Beach, California with one goal…being accepted into an exclusive summer writing camp.  She needs the recommendation of her grumpy English teacher, Mr. Franklin, but he thinks her writing isn’t good enough.  Logan decides to use her new knowledge of astrology to impress Franklin.  If she can identify the members of the Gears, a secret group of students causing problems on and off campus, Franklin (a victim of the Gears) will be thankful enough to recommend her for the program.  If, in the process she also can use astrology to attract the attention of super hot Nathan and create a love connection between Mr. Franklin and the newspaper advisor, Ms. Snider, then all the better.

However, Logan discovers that just because she knows a person’s sign, doesn’t mean she’s got them completely figured out.  As Fearless Astrology warns, astrology is not an exact science and there are always a few surprises along the way.

Aries Rising was a refreshing departure from the supernatural books I normally read (don’t get me wrong, I still love vamps, zombies, and the undead).  It blends mystery, romance, and real life in an entertaining way that had me reading long into the night.  I found myself constantly referring back to the little tidbits offered at the beginning of each chapter about astrology to see how they applied to me and my friends.  After reading this book and its sequel, Taurus Eyes, I’ve found I want to learn more about Zodiac signs.  Good thing the library has plenty of astrology books!

Get both Aries Rising and Taurus Eyes for free--just be the first to leave a comment! Don't forget to tell us which Fresno County library you want to pick it up at.

Free books! I'm in! These sound interesting, and I can't believe that an author is coming to Fresno, it just doesn't happen around here. (Please come here, Tamora Pierce, or JK Rowling)

I'll pick it up, maybe tomorrow, no need to send it. I go to the Clovis Branch at least once a week, either way.
