Free Fridays: The Candidates

Every Friday we review a new book and give a copy of the book away. To get the book, it's simple: just fill out the form at the bottom of the page.

The Candidates (first in the Delacroix Academy series) by Inara Scott

Dancia Lewis doesn’t try to fit it. She’s just your average teenager. She gets average grades and wears bland clothes in order to not stand out in a crowd. This all suits her just fine; she wants you to forget about her, or better yet not even talk to her at all, because Dancia has a secret. Whenever someone she cares about gets is in danger, something happens. The danger is gone, but someone ends up hurt. This is why Dancia hides away from people; if she doesn’t form attachments, she won’t care and no one will get hurt. So she keeps her powers hidden.

Since Dancia considers herself so average, she is shocked when the prestigious Delcroix Academy not only recruits her, but offers her a full scholarship. But once Dancia gets to the school, she begins to wonder why she is there, and so do many of her classmates. She had no exceptional talent, unless you count her telekinetic powers, which she doesn’t. To make matters worse (or better?) the hottest guy in school is going out of his way to make her feel welcome.

Things would be going somewhat smoothly, if it weren’t for the fact that her friend Jack can’t stay out of trouble and is overly suspicious of the school. He thinks there is something evil going on at the school and he drags Dancia into his paranoia. Dancia wants to believe there is a reason why she is there and hopes that maybe the school knows more about her gift, but what Dancia finds out, is not at all what she expected.

I was surprised at how much I liked this book. I’m a little weary of series after being let down by the Immortal series, but I can’t wait to read the next book in the series. The next book, The Watchers, comes out in April 2012.
