Banned Books Week: The Earth, My Butt, and Other Big Round Things

Favorite (almost) Banned Book: The Earth, My Butt, and Other Big Round Things by Carolyn Mackler

Virginia lives by the Fat Girl Code of Conduct, which basically means that she does not deserve the same things other girls do. She can hook up with boys, but she can't talk about it in public. She should go further than the skinny girls would. She must never ask for a relationship. These rules are self-imposed, but she's just trying to make her way in a family full of perfect people. Then her perfect older brother gets accused of date rape, and the perfect family image gets turned inside out. Only then can Virginia see that she doesn't have to be flawless in order to deserve respect from other people--and herself.

This is a great book because the readers get to see Virginia grow and realize she's worthy of a lot more than she allows herself. She is funny, relatable, and real.
