House of Dark Shadows

House of Dark Shadows (Dreamhouse Kings series) by Robert T. Liparulo
Guest review by Laura

Two young children watch helplessly as their mother claws at the walls while a large man drags her into a room…where they seem to just disappear.

Years later, the King family moves to the remote town of Pinedale and buy an old Victorian house. 15-year-old Xander, the oldest of the three King children, senses something sinister about their new home but his father keeps telling him to "trust him." That trust is tested when Xander begins to uncover the house's secrets: hallways seem to be longer than the length of the house, voices echo and shift from room to room...and then Xander finds out what really happened to that woman who was carried away from her children.

This book has some genuinely spine-chilling moments, but it is balanced with interesting characters and moments of magical discovery and adventure. House of Dark Shadows is the first in what appears to be a well-written and exciting series.

Recommended for teens who want something with a clever mix of scary and mysterious. Check out the official website here.
